[The idea of eating with her makes his skin crawl, but he's trying to be better. He needs to be better for Vash.]

She was worried about you. She contacted me to ask if you were safe.

I hope you told her that I'm safe because I am safe. I'm alright in here. [He's just bored and lonely.]

I told her you told me you were safe.

And I am. It's actually one of the nicer jails I've been in. It has air-conditioning! [That's not something most people boast about.]

Air conditioning.

Alright. That is actually impressive.

The best invention. Not that it's needed very much in winter.

[A beat.]

You know, our contract is coming up. We should probably make sure it's renewed again once I'm out to sign it.

You would be willing to do that?

[He had assumed that now that Legato is here and Knives has a contract, Vash would be less willing to continue theirs.]

Yeah. I would be alright with keeping it.

[Although... nothing asked nothing ever gained.]

But what about changing it just a teeeeny tiiiiiiny bit. Just to say I'm allowed to live on my own? [He tries to ask it in a casual way. Like it was no big deal at all.]

[That suggestions spikes a dark, possessive desire in Knives. He liked having his brother in the same place as him. The idea that Vash wanted to move out made him feel like Vash was wanting to run away from him.]

Why?

Well, Legato could have his own room then. Some space to call his own.

And I could still come over and visit. Have dinner and such. I would just have some other space to invite people over to or you know... spend the night a couple times a month?

Oh yes. I'd imagine Bluesummers would take to that well. He wouldn't at all see no longer sharing my room as a punishment.

[D-damn it.] He might? You know... bigger space? [Yeah, Vash doesn't sound like he believes what he's saying at all.]

Does that seem to matter to him?

I don't know! That guy is hard to figure out sometimes! [Vash sighs in annoyance. Knowing that this was not one of those times.]

You could ask him while I'm in here. See what he might like to do. And if he's happy with the arrangement as it is then... well... fine. I can live with the two of you again. [He can't bring himself to ask that Legato be sent away.]

I would like that.

And one other thing. I think I might have found a job. Working in the parks in the Up. They won't hire me without your approval and I know you provide me with enough, but I'd like the job. Something to keep me out of trouble and busy.

I approve of the idea. Once you're out, I'll go with you to make sure you can apply.

Working in the parks sounds relaxing.

Thanks Knives! It does! I'm hoping to learn a bit while on the job! [The position is mostly changing the garbage cans in the park, but still, Vash was looking forward to it.]

Are they going to let you work with the plants?

Probably not right away, but maybe eventually? Either way I'll be working near the plants.

That sounds peaceful.

[The connection wavers a bit as Vash's attention is drawn away to something else. It's only for a couple moments before he focuses back on their conversation.] I guess I should let you sleep now, huh?

What happened?

A couple people making a racket. The guards have taken care of it. [Vash just couldn't help paying attention in case he needed to offer his brand of 'help'.] Nothing to worry about. Just them shouting about quiet time reminded me how late it was getting.
