[Vash kneels down next to his brother. Watching what comes out of the pack.]

I noticed Legato has woken up. [The asshole.] I hope he's doing better. It had to be unsettling sleeping for so long. [The asshole.]

[Knives manages not to react in any way to the mention of Legato, even if it brings to mind memories of what he and Legato did right after he woke.]

At least he didn't have nightmares at that time...

Yeah... [Vash probably should feel bad about the fact Legato has nightmares every night. Should understand how Legato might feel as Vash suffers the same fate, but he just can't bring himself to feel bad.] ...at least there's that. It would have been awful to be stuck asleep for so long and with nothing but nightmares.

[Knives pauses his work and looks at Vash for a moment.]

His waking hours are filled with nightmares enough.

[Vash snorts.] Those he makes himself. [The words are bitterly spoken under his breath before he can think twice about what he was saying and to who.]

[Knives is quiet and very still. He stares at Vash with narrowed eyes.]

Yes. Because nothing at all about this world would be upsetting for someone who was once a child sex slave.

[Vash immediately averts his eyes.] I'm sorry. You're right about that. It must be very difficult for him to be here in this city, but that doesn't excuse his behavior. Especially when it comes to hurting the people I care about. [Still really angry about that walking Azwel off the roof thing.]

Hm. Of course. Nevermind that he was raped throughout his childhood and then taken in to be raised by a monster. He's the one to blame for his bad behavior.

He walked my friend who did nothing to him off of a roof! And unless you told him to do that then YES he is the one to blame for that bad behavior.

[Knives rolls his eyes, clearly bored with this conversation now.]

That's not something you can just roll your eyes at Knives like it will make the fact that just because something bad happened to him as a kid means everything he does is excusable.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to feel bad or that he shouldn't. I'm not even saying he shouldn't be angry at those who hurt him, but that doesn't make it right for him to lash out at innocent people.

[He sighs and focuses on planting as Vash speaks, not looking back up at his brother.]

It's not just what happened to him as a child, you idiot. It's everything after that. Everything I did to him.

Well, yeah, that didn't help, but you didn't ask him to walk my friends off a roof either.

[Vash frowns. Not his favorite answer, but it is basically what he wants to hear.

He didn't really want to be getting into this argument once again on their birthday. Vash returns his attention back to the plants. Helping to dig up the dirt and place them in.]

Do you use your powers at all while at work? To help things grow?

[Knives will allow the subject change.] Only when required to keep a plant alive.

Mostly, they're capable of growing on their own.

Is it dangerous? For us to use our powers in that way? [There is so much about his own body that he just doesn't know about.]

It's not dangerous. It uses part of what we have left, though.

[Vash sits back onto his heels. Thinking over his brother's words.] Then-- isn't it better if we don't use it? Knives-- you... [His eyes flick briefly up towards his brother's black hair before returning to the plants.] ...you don't really have a lot left.

I don't.

I'm pretty sure this place won't let me die, though.

That's no reason to test it! What if it suddenly stops reviving people!?

[He shrugs. Once again he seems bored with the topic.]

[Vash frowns.] You shouldn't shrug something like that off so easily.

I'll be careful if it makes you feel at ease.

I mean... it would, but I'd feel even more at ease if you were doing it for yourself as well.
